John Wenzel

John Wenzel’s journey with art began in an unconventional way—his first “art teacher” was a basketball coach who knew nothing about the subject. That early independence shaped his creative spirit, leading him to Ohio University, where he discovered a passion for ceramics.
Though he had the opportunity to lead the university’s ceramics department, John chose instead to pursue life as a working artist in the West. Since opening his first studio in Los Angeles in 1965, he has dedicated his career to the art of stoneware, developing signature brushwork glazes that merge abstract painting with functional pottery.
Now based in Louisville, CO, John continues to refine his craft, creating stunning pieces for collectors and chefs alike—including his son, Chef Elan Wenzel of The Element Knife Company. His work is a testament to a lifelong commitment to exploration, craftsmanship, and artistry.
