Janice Sugg

Janice Sugg is a Colorado native who has been painting professionally for over 25 years. Now based in the Boulder–Longmont area, she continues to develop a distinctive body of work rooted in the Western landscape, yet untethered from convention.
Janice’s painting style is defined by rich layering, unexpected color palettes, and a subjective sense of atmosphere. She blends texture and color with a process of applying, wiping, and refining successive layers, revealing intricate patterns and underlying designs. Her use of color defies clichés—skies aren’t necessarily blue, and land isn’t always green—allowing emotion and intuition to guide her palette. This bold and expressive approach has become a signature element of her work.
Her imagery often explores the concept of the horizon and evokes the expansive quality of place. Birds, bison, and horses frequently appear in her paintings, adding a dynamic presence to these imagined or remembered landscapes. With each piece, she invites viewers into a world that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
