Birds have always been in my life for as long as I can remember. The men in my family hunted birds. Ducks, geese, doves, and quail were frequently on our Sunday dinner table.
My grandmother could speak to the wild ducks and geese. She would call out “deedle, deedle, deedle” and they would run over to her to eat the field corn she fed them. She had a parakeet that would sit on her shoulder and sing when she played the piano. You could always hear her peacocks calling from the pine trees when you went outside. I learned how to mimic their calls and spoke back to them. I even raised a rescue Mallard duckling till it was able to return to the wild.
My interpretation of birds in this show is all fantasy birds in my head. I draw them, name them, and then make them. Some are made out of porcelain, or steel, and the newest medium “Clay Shay” (a powdered clay that you add water to and apply over an armature). During covid, I was able to make my studio in a world of birds. Welcome to my world….
