Brigette Tawa

self portrait.JPG

Brigitte Tawa was born in Provence in the south of France, where she first began working with clay at the age of thirteen. From the beginning she was drawn to the way clay seemed to “talk” through her hands, beginning a lifelong conversation with the material.

Working primarily with porcelain, Brigitte hand-builds each piece using very few tools, allowing the form to develop through a direct relationship between artist and clay. Porcelain’s sensitivity and responsiveness are central to her practice. Natural fissures, openings, and subtle imperfections remain visible in her work, revealing the dialogue between the material and the maker and ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.

Her forms are deeply inspired by nature and the landscapes that have shaped her life. Though she grew up between the Mediterranean coast and the Alps, she has lived in Colorado for more than forty years, drawn by its mountains and wild places. For Brigitte, working with porcelain is an elemental process—earth, water, air, minerals, and fire coming together in a transformation that continues to surprise her with each firing.
